To say Mexico is having a moment feels like an understatement—the gravitational pull of this massive, multi-faceted country makes choosing where to start the hardest part. For first-time visitors, this itinerary will introduce you to the country, whilst digging deep on the destinations we visit. If you’ve been before, you know better than anyone: There’s no way you can see, taste, and do all you’ll want to in one visit, and we’re excited to bring you back.
We’ve chosen Mexico City as our first stop: This sprawling, complex, always changing megalopolis is a study in contrasts, from its food scene, a mix of epic street food and chef-driven restaurants, to its art scene, which pairs folk with cutting edge. It’s also home to sophisticated hotels, grand public parks and boulevards, and chic shopping streets that rival those of Europe. Mexico City gets under your skin—visit once, and you’ll definitely be back.
For our second destination, we’ll head to the country’s cultural epicenter: Oaxaca. This region is home to more indigenous cultures than any other part of Mexico, which shows in the rich mix of food, rituals, artisanal traditions, and languages spoken. It’s no surprise, then, that the city itself has been drawing artists and travelers in search of inspiration for generations.
Solo travel and safety are two of the biggest topics discussed in the Women Who Travel Facebook group, and we hope this trip will help travelers feel empowered about both. With experts like El Camino Travel leading the charge, we want female travelers to feel excited to hoof it through Mexico solo or with a friend—or two, or three—and meet other passionate travelers along the way.
