Egypt, Temple and Table

Move through the Giza Plateau's pyramids, the mosques and market streets of Islamic Cairo, and the Nubian villages and temple towns that line the Nile from Aswan to Luxor.

Pyramids, Mosques, and the Nile in Between

Limestone plateaus, mosque-lined streets, and temple islands rebuilt stone by stone — this journey moves through three chapters of Egypt along a single stretch of the Nile: Cairo's monuments and old quarters, Aswan's Nubian riverside villages, and Luxor's temple complexes and royal tombs. You'll stand at the base of the Great Pyramid and inside the Grand Egyptian Museum, walk between Ibn Tulun Mosque and the Gayer-Anderson House next door, hike and kayak the river before a felucca sail at sunset, and move between Karnak's Avenue of Sphinxes and the Valley of the Kings on Luxor's west bank.

About your trip

This itinerary keeps to a single stretch of the Nile — Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor — each day moving further south into a different chapter of Egypt. Cairo's monuments give way to Aswan's Nubian river culture, and Aswan gives way to Luxor's temple complexes and royal tombs, all in one direction.

South of Cairo, a hike and a kayak along the Nile lead to lunch at a Nubian eco-lodge, a sunset felucca sail, and a visit to Philae Temple, dismantled and rebuilt after the Aswan Dam's construction. In Luxor, a bike ride along the west bank closes into a home-cooked dinner in a local household — a trip built around temples raised across three thousand years, and the people who still live alongside them.
