Mongolia, Wide Open

Move through Mongolia’s sweeping steppe, quiet horizons, and enduring nomadic traditions that continue to shape daily life across the land.

Inside the Heart of Mongolia

Wind-carved steppe, sacred mountains, river valleys, and rich pastureland — this journey moves through Mongolia's Central Heartland, far from city sprawl and into landscapes shaped by deep history and belief. You'll experience stark contrasts, from the pulse of Ulaanbaatar to the granite and basalt formations of Khogno Khan (the Kingly Mountain), onward to the therapeutic hot springs of Tsenkher and the Orkhon River Valley, where green plains are dotted with ancient burial mounds.

About your trip

Mongolia is vast — one of the largest and least densely populated countries in the world — and each region carries its own rhythm, landscape, and way of life. Rather than trying to cover the whole country, this trip is intentionally centered on the Central Heartland, home to Genghis Khan's legacy and described in Mongolian cultural writing as the place where land, sky, and identity are inseparable, a perspective that comes into focus through the region's living herding traditions and daily life shaped by the land itself. The Gobi Desert and the northern taiga are extraordinary in their own right, but they demand the time and pacing of dedicated itineraries of their own.

Along the way, you'll spend a day getting a real sense of Ulaanbaatar — a capital city that holds nearly half of Mongolia's 3 million people — camel trek across the Elsen Tasarkhai dunes with a local camel-herding family, comb and milk yaks alongside a herding family in the Khangai Mountains, soak in the mineral pools at Tsenkher, and ride horseback through the Orkhon River Valley with people for whom this landscape is simply home.
