A Feast for the Senses

Humming cities, dramatic highland valleys, indigenous and ethnic villages, and fragrant flavors—northern Vietnam is a destination that reveals itself in layers. Join us on a journey through three distinct regions of the north: the creative and cultural depth of Hanoi, the agricultural highlands of Pieng Ve, and the limestone waterways of Ninh Binh.

About your trip

Northern Vietnam is incredibly diverse—its regions shift dramatically in landscape, culture, and pace—and each deserves to be experienced with intention. Instead of attempting to cover the country in a single journey, we've designed this itinerary around three distinct regions in the north: the creative capital of Hanoi, the indigenous Thái* highland communities of Pieng Ve, and the limestone karst landscape of Ninh Binh.

Vietnam's more traveled routes—Ha Long Bay, the southern coast, the central cities—are unique in their own right, but they require a different pace and focus. By centering this trip in the north, we're able to craft an experience that goes beyond surface-level sightseeing—one built around meaningful encounters with artists, craftspeople, and communities, rather than rushing between the country's most photographed landmarks.

*Please note that these are one of Vietnam's indigenous ethnic groups, distinct from the Thai of Thailand despite sharing distant linguistic roots.

Your Itinerary

  • Arrival in Hanoi | Welcome Dinner

Xin chào! Touchdown in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital where French colonial architecture, Soviet-era blocks, and ancient temples share the same city blocks. Upon arrival at Noibai International Airport, you'll be picked up and transferred to your hotel—a newly opened property in the heart of the city that blends French colonial elegance with contemporary design.

Take some time to settle in. For those seeking to recover from the flight, a massage is available at the hotel, or your guide can point you to a nearby social enterprise known for its Vietnamese massages and ethnic herbal baths.

At sunset, meet the group for a stroll through the Old Quarter to a tucked-away spot for cocktails with your guide. Then head to dinner at a colonial house restaurant whose menu is built on traditional Vietnamese cooking—fresh ingredients, local herbs and spices, and a modernist touch—where you'll share the table with local entrepreneurs whose work and lives offer a first, honest introduction to modern-day Vietnam.

    • Accommodation: Hanoi hotel (city center, French colonial style)

    • Meals Included: Dinner

  • Colonial Architecture Walk | Street Food Stroll | Fine Arts Museum & Temple Calligraphy Workshop

There's a reason Hanoi takes time to understand — two thousand years of occupation, Chinese, French, Soviet, left their mark on the same city blocks, and the result is a built environment unlike anywhere else in Southeast Asia. This morning, you'll start to unpack it alongside an internationally exhibited artist and curator whose entire practice is dedicated to that question, leading a walk through the Old Quarter that reads the city's layers of colonial, Chinese, and Soviet influence through its facades, alleyways, and public murals. The walk ends at a café over cà phê trứng (egg coffee), invented here in 1946 and still made the same way.

For lunch, we'll embark on a street food stroll through the narrow lanes of the Old Quarter, working through the northern Vietnamese canon — bún chả, phở bò, bánh cuốn, and more — dishes that belong specifically to this region and are distinct from the food most travelers associate with Vietnam. Afterward, we'll head back to the hotel for some time to rest and recharge.

Later in the afternoon, we'll meet up again to visit the Fine Arts Museum alongside a Hanoi-based contemporary artist who has been active on the city's art scene for nearly two decades — a grounding in Vietnamese art history from the French colonial period through to today, told through lacquer paintings, silk paintings, and woodblock prints. The day closes with private evening access to the Temple of Literature — Hanoi's 11th-century Confucian temple and the country's first national university — where a master calligrapher leads a hands-on workshop in traditional Vietnamese calligraphy.

    • Accommodation: Hanoi hotel (city center, French colonial style)

    • Meals Included: Breakfast and lunch

  • Morning Tai Chi | Breakfast Street Food Tour | Fashion Boutique | Private Family Temple | Traditional Medicine Shop

Rise early for a Tai Chi class in a public park led by a female master — part martial art, part moving meditation, practiced by Hanoi's residents in these same parks for generations. Afterward, join your guide in the Old Quarter for a morning street food tour — Hanoi's morning street food scene is entirely different from its evening one, with snacks and an iconic coffee that are worth getting up early for.

The rest of the morning and afternoon is yours — enjoy the hotel, explore the city independently, or follow your Eat, Play, Shop Guide to wherever the day takes you. For those who want a more structured afternoon, your host can point you in the direction of a private family temple devoted to six generations of ancestor worship, and one of the city's oldest pharmacy streets where a fourth-generation practitioner of traditional Vietnamese herbal medicine has been teaching and practicing since 1900 — both are worth seeking out on your own.

In the late afternoon, meet back up with the rest of the group to visit a boutique fashion label founded by a Spanish designer who has spent years working with Vietnamese craftspeople — merging European minimalism with local artisanal techniques and the áo dài, Vietnam's national garment.

The evening closes at a garden villa on the outskirts of the city, where a host and his chef offer a modern and unusual culinary experience — a menu that shifts with the season and the chef's inspiration, served in a peaceful setting far from the city's noise.

    • Accommodation: Hanoi hotel (city center, French colonial style)

    • Meals Included: Breakfast and dinner

  • Journey to Pieng Ve | Thái Family Lunch & Craft Workshop | Highland Retreat

After breakfast, drive into the highlands of northwestern Vietnam toward Pieng Ve, a Thái village set against the Pa Co–Hang Kia massif. The Thái are one of Vietnam's indigenous highland ethnic groups — distinct from the Thai of Thailand despite sharing distant linguistic roots — who have shaped these valleys, rice paddies, and villages for centuries.

Arrive for lunch at a Thái family home, where the table is laid with dishes made from ingredients grown or foraged locally, prepared from recipes that belong to this family specifically. After lunch, join a hands-on craft workshop with the family and their neighbors, learning to make the everyday agricultural tools of Thái highland life — straw brooms, bamboo baskets, fishing nets — using techniques passed down through generations.

In the afternoon, you'll arrive at your home for the next two nights — a highland retreat of traditional-style villas perched above a valley of rice fields, with a waterfall running through the property and a spa built along its course offering herbal bath treatments rooted in the medicinal traditions of the highland communities nearby. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the property and unwinding at your own pace. Dinner is at leisure at the lodge.

    • Accommodation: Highland retreat in Pieng Ve

    • Meals Included: Breakfast and lunch

  • Ban Buot Village Heritage Farm Walk & Jungle Picnic | Flower Hmông Village at Sunset

The morning is yours at the lodge — take a slow breakfast, use the pool, or simply sit with the mountain views before the day begins.

In the afternoon, travel to a nearby Thái village where a community member will walk you through the valley's heritage agriculture — traditional practices governing water use and forest protection that have maintained the ecological balance of this land across generations. The walk ends at a waterfall where a jungle picnic has been prepared using local ingredients and traditional techniques. Time for a swim or kayaking on the river afterward.

From there, drive to a Flower Hmông village perched at 1,483 meters in the Pa Co–Hang Kia range. The Flower Hmông — named for the elaborate floral embroidery and batik work of their traditional dress — have maintained a largely agricultural way of life in these highlands since migrating from southern China in the 18th century. You'll be welcomed at the home of a family who has lived here for five generations over a local drink, as the valley below catches the late afternoon light. On a clear day, the entire Pieng Ve valley stretches to the south with the karst outline of Pu Luong nature reserve in the distance.

    • Accommodation: Highland retreat in Pieng Ve

    • Meals Included: Breakfast and lunch

  • Journey to Tam Coc | Van Long Nature Reserve | Thụng Lá Temple

After breakfast, drive toward Ninh Binh province, known locally as "Halong Bay on land." The landscape transforms as you descend from the highlands — mountains dissolving into the flat, river-threaded geometry of the Red River Delta, the historical heartland of Vietnamese civilization and one of the most agriculturally significant regions in Southeast Asia. Stop at Van Long Nature Reserve, a protected flooded ecosystem and one of the last habitats of the critically endangered Delacour's langur, for lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, you'll visit Thụng Lá Temple — a sanctuary nestled in a natural valley encircled by five mountains, dedicated to two legendary female figures whose spiritual roles shaped the rise of a 10th-century Vietnamese king. It sits at the intersection of nature, oral history, and Vietnamese religious life in a way that is difficult to find on a standard itinerary.

From there, arrive at your lodge in Tam Coc in the early evening — a garden property nested between limestone peaks and rice paddies, built in the spirit of an authentic Vietnamese village with stone houses set within a lush garden landscape. Dinner is at leisure.

    • Accommodation: Boutique garden property in Ninh Binh

    • Meals Included: Breakfast and lunch

  • Garden Cooking Class | Valley of Birds Hike & Rowboat

The morning begins with a walk through the lodge gardens with the chef to gather fresh ingredients before settling into a hands-on cooking class focused on the traditional cuisine of the Red River Delta — dishes shaped by the landscape you've spent the week moving through. You'll eat what you make.

After lunch, head out for a two-kilometer hike through the Thung Nham nature reserve, known locally as the Valley of Birds, alongside a passionate local gardener and former hunter who has spent his life studying this forest. The trail winds through ficus, lianas, and mossy karst boulders before opening onto the waterways — where a rowboat takes you through channels lined with rice paddies, water lilies, and lotus. The evening is yours to relax and enjoy.

    • Accommodation: Boutique garden property in Ninh Binh

    • Meals Included: Breakfast and lunch

  • Embroidery Workshop | Farewell Dinner with Women's Association

The morning is yours — sleep in, enjoy the lodge, or head out to explore. For those who want to keep moving, your host can help organize additional activities including an early market tour of Yen Mac village or a bike ride through the surrounding countryside.

In the late afternoon, you'll visit a skilled embroidery artisan from Van Lam village who upholds a tradition passed down from her father. Through her work she not only preserves this delicate craft but actively shares it beyond her community — her pieces reflect both artistic mastery and a deep sense of cultural pride, offering a window into the rich textile traditions of the Ninh Binh region.

The week ends with a farewell dinner hosted by the Women's Association of the valley, featuring dances and songs dedicated to the boatwomen of Ninh Binh, the rice farming culture of the Delta, and the lotus fields of Thung Nham.

Important Notes

  • Our small group trips are intentionally designed for a specific kind of traveler.

Before booking, all travelers must read and agree to our Traveler Values. This ensures we’re aligned on expectations, travel style, and how we show up—for each other and for the communities we visit.

By joining an El Camino small group trip, you’re confirming that:

    • You are open-minded, curious, and present—more interested in the moment than perfection. You enjoy stepping outside your comfort zone and are excited to engage with cultures different from your own.

    • You’ve read the full itinerary, understand the travel style and accommodations, and feel comfortable with what’s outlined.

    • You recognize that you’re visiting places where daily rhythms may differ from home, and you approach those differences with patience and respect.

    • You understand that travel can be unpredictable, and that last-minute changes due to weather, logistics, or local circumstances are sometimes unavoidable.

    • You’re adaptable, easy-going, and able to roll with changes—knowing that some of the best moments come from the unexpected. You know you can opt out of any activity at any time, and will communicate openly with your guide when you do.

    • If concerns arise, you’re willing to raise them directly with your local host or the El Camino team so we can address them proactively.

    • You value inclusivity and are excited to travel alongside people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

    • You show up with generosity—toward fellow travelers, local partners, and the places we’re privileged to visit.

Our trips are rooted in responsible tourism, mutual respect, and shared experience. Agreeing to these values helps ensure a positive, connected journey for everyone involved.

  • Most Vietnam itineraries try to cover too much—racing between Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City in a single trip, with most of the time spent in transit. We take a different approach.

We've centered this journey around three regions in the north that are each entirely unlike the others: Hanoi, the creative and cultural capital; Pieng Ve, where the Thái and Flower Hmông communities offer a perspective on Vietnam most itineraries never reach; and Tam Coc, the Red River Delta, the historical heartland of Vietnamese civilization. We're often asked why we chose Tam Coc over Ha Long Bay—the landscapes are comparable, but Tam Coc offers the same drama without the overcrowding.

By staying in the north and limiting ourselves to three destinations, we've been able to design a trip built around depth rather than distance. Your time in Vietnam is finite. We'd rather you leave with a genuine understanding of three places than a surface impression of six.

  • All our small group trips include a professional photographer.

This isn’t about content creation or social media—it’s about presence. Having a photographer allows travelers to fully experience a place and the people they meet, without feeling pressure to document every moment themselves.

The photographers we work with are highly respected professionals who know how to move quietly, capture real moments, and tell the story of a journey with sensitivity and care.

  • Fly into and depart from Hanoi — Noibai International Airport (HAN).

  • We encourage travelers to arrive no later than 3 pm local time. This gives you enough time to settle in before the welcome dinner on Day 1. You can leave anytime on your last day, but we encourage you to leave later in the evening so you can really enjoy the last hotel and have a slower morning.

  • This trip is for the traveler who has an adventurous spirit, wants to squeeze the most out of their time in Vietnam, and cares about making the world a better place through responsible tourism. You're open-minded, inherently curious, and find as much joy in a street food stall as in a colonial house restaurant. You're excited to engage with cultures different from your own—not from a distance, but through direct encounters in kitchens, workshops, highland villages, and family homes.

This trip is ideal if you:

    • Are drawn to food, craft, and art as ways of understanding a place

    • Want to experience Vietnam beyond its most photographed landmarks

    • Travel solo and want the company of a thoughtful, interesting group

    • Are comfortable with boutique (not luxury) accommodations and some logistical flexibility

    • Appreciate slowing down—spending real time in a place rather than rushing between destinations

You enjoy moments of comfort—thoughtful meals, well-chosen stays, restorative settings—but you also understand that some of the most meaningful experiences happen in places that aren't polished: a highland family's home, a jungle picnic, a pharmacy street that hasn't changed in generations.

Our adventurous style of group travel is not for everyone. Please read carefully through the itinerary and description above to ensure this trip fits your travel style.

Please review our Traveler Values prior to booking.

  • We are not a luxury travel company, but we're not budget either. At El Camino Travel, our version of "high–low" is rooted in culture, contrast, and connection. We believe a destination reveals itself through a mix of experiences—and Vietnam makes that philosophy feel especially true.

You'll stay in thoughtfully chosen boutique properties that prioritize character, atmosphere, and connection to their surroundings: a newly opened hotel in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter, a highland retreat of traditional-style villas above a valley of rice fields, and a garden lodge nested among the limestone peaks of Tam Coc. These properties offer comfort and a strong sense of place, but the heart of the trip lives in the experiences in between: walking Hanoi's architectural layers with an artist, sharing a meal at a Thái family home, cooking from a lodge garden, and drifting through karst waterways by rowboat.

Some moments will feel elevated—private temple access, a colonial house dinner, a waterfall spa. Others will take you somewhere deeply local: a jungle picnic prepared over an open fire, a highland craft workshop, a farewell dinner hosted by a local women's association. It's this balance that gives the journey its texture.

If you appreciate boutique stays, meaningful cultural encounters, and travel that leans into the beauty of contrast, this trip will feel completely aligned with the way you want to travel.

  • Our standard pricing is based on shared double rooms. This keeps the trip more accessible and allows us to stay in boutique properties that are intimate, well-designed, and deeply connected to the landscapes and communities around them. If you're traveling with a friend, partner, or family member, let us know and we will room you together.

Traveling solo? Most of our travelers do. Before departure, we'll connect with you to learn more about your preferences and match you with a compatible roommate. If you have any questions or concerns about sharing a room, we're always happy to talk them through.

Single room upgrades are available. If the guaranteed single rooms are sold out at checkout, please email us at info@elcamino.travel and we will let you know if any additional availability can be secured.

Here's the overall style you can expect:

    • In Hanoi: a newly opened property in the heart of the city that blends French colonial elegance with contemporary design—a considered, characterful base for three days of exploring the capital.

    • In Pieng Ve: a highland retreat of traditional-style villas perched above a valley of rice fields, with a waterfall running through the property and a spa built along its course.

    • In Tam Coc: a garden lodge nested between limestone peaks and rice paddies, designed in the spirit of an authentic Vietnamese village and deeply connected to the local community and landscape around it.

  • No more than 14 travelers, 1 ECT host, and 1 photographer .

    Who will be our host?

We work with a roster of well-qualified local hosts. Prior to your trip, you’ll receive a welcome packet with information about who will be guiding your journey. We work with local hosts because no one is better equipped to provide layer upon layer of context than someone who is actually from here.

  • A non-refundable deposit of 30% of the total trip cost is due at booking. The remaining balance is due 90 days prior to departure.

Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions for more information about our cancellation policy.

  • Our Vietnam itinerary is active and requires travelers to be comfortable walking, standing, and moving across varied terrain. Throughout the trip, activities may include navigating the cobblestones and narrow alleyways of Hanoi's Old Quarter, hiking through highland jungle and rice fields, walking village paths, and participating in hands-on workshops. Many of the most meaningful experiences on this trip take place on foot and outdoors.

    Travelers should be prepared for:

    • Walking up to 4 miles per day, sometimes in warm and humid conditions.

    • The Ban Buot valley walk, approximately 4–5 kilometers through highland agricultural terrain.

    • The Thung Nham hike on Day 7, covering 2 kilometers with 150 meters of elevation gain.

    • Standing for extended periods during workshops, market visits, and cultural demonstrations.

While we always aim to support different needs, alternative transportation is not always possible in natural or rural settings, and some activities require a baseline level of mobility to participate safely. If you have concerns about the activity level, have recently had surgery, or have a history of mobility issues, please reach out to us at info@elcamino.travel before booking. We want to ensure that every traveler can participate fully and safely.

By joining this trip, you acknowledge that a moderate level of physical fitness is required to enjoy the experience.
